When Thinking about Fandom, what comes to your mind? Would you share every detail of your fandom with another person? It’s more likely that each of you would be put into a ven diagram where there is overlap in the center, but each has individual parts. That is what The Lost In Fandom Podcast is here to explore. It is not a specific fandom but how we interact with it, from expression to healing, finding community and joy.
In this week’s episode of the Fandom Podcast, I sat down with my friends Jose and Eddie to ask them about their fandoms. We delve deep into each of their fandoms, letting them express what that fandom means to them and how they get to experience it.
Eddie mentions his favorite game, Super Smash Brothers Melee, and how he got into it. Super Smash Brothers Melee has been on the rise in the esports arena with a “new event, GENESIS X, will be our biggest so far in 2024. It’s due to feature a ton of the biggest Smash Bros players turning up, with tournaments for the vast majority of games in the series.” Jordan Ashley quoted Gebisis e-sport organizers in an e-sports.net article.
Regarding fandoms, the creators can only create so much content. So when everything is said and done, or a franchise is around for so long, fans tend to develop theories surrounding them. For example, have you ever heard of the Pixar Connecet Univers theory? The Pixar Theory is a fan-made hypothesis that suggests all Pixar movies exist within the same universe and are connected in a coherent timeline. This theory was first proposed by Jon Negroni in 2013. What other theories could you think of, and do you think Jose and Eddie will have the same one?
